Machine learning and topology classify neuronal morphologies

Lida Kanari · Neuromatch 5

Wed, Sep 28, 2022

The shapes of neuronal morphologies are essential for the dynamical properties of the brain, as their branching patterns govern different functional properties of cell types. However, disagreements on the definition of neuronal classes due to the subjective views of the experts have spawned several efforts to find an objective way of deriving a morphology classification. We combine machine learning with a variety of mathematical tools to group neuronal morphologies into stable classes. We show that different methods perform optimally on different use-cases. Thus, we propose a combination of tr

Making spinal sensory interneurons from stem cells for regenerative therapies

Sandeep Gupta · University of California, LA

Sun, Jun 13, 2021 · 17:30 UTC

Dr. Gupta is carrying out his post doctoral studies in the Buter Laboratory in UCLA. He is applying his his knowledge of embryology to stem cells for developing regenerative therapies to treat spinal cord injuries. In this talk, he will discuss how understanding the logic for spinal cord development led us to derive diverse sensory neuronal classes from embryonic stem cells. The spinal sensory neurons enableus to perceive our environment through modalities that are lost in spinal injury patients. These ESC derived senory neurons can help regain sensation in spina cord injury patients through r
