Hyperbaric oxygenation enhances neurogenesis in subventricular zone after traumatic brain injury

Rada Jeremic, Sanja Dacic, Sanja Pekovic, Marina Djelic, Predrag Brkic · FENS Forum 2024

Due to the complexity of the events in the tissue after the traumatic brain injury, adequate therapeutic protocols still need to be improved. A growing number of data suggests that hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) can influence the activity of adult neural stem cells (NSCs). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sensorimotor cortex ablation (SCA) and HBO on processes of neurogenesis in the subventricular zone (SVZ), rostral migratory stream (RMS) and around the lesion site. The experiments were performed on adult male Wistar rats, ten weeks old. Animals were randomized into two g

New players in neurodevelopment: Role of meningeal macrophages in developmental neurogenesis

Laure Salvon, Laurie Arnaud, Annie Roussel, Michel Gomes, Julie Rebejac, Mitchell Bijnen, Melanie Greter, Thomas Marissal, Rejane Rua · FENS Forum 2024

The meninges are a protective and nutritious tissue that surrounds the central nervous system (CNS) and supports the brain. Recent data, including from our team, have revealed that the meninges contain a myriad of immune cells, such as meningeal macrophages (MM). Interestingly, the meninges penetrate the brain parenchyma and contact sub-structures such as the hippocampus, which is one of the main neurogenic niches. This strategic position of the meninges and thus MM raised the hypothesis that these cells could play a role in hippocampal neonatal neurogenesis. To address this question, we used

Viral encephalitis causes rapid transient depletion of neuronal progenitor cells and chronically alters neurogenesis in the adult mouse dentate gyrus

Alberto Pauletti, Polina Gurlo, Edna Weiß, Ana Beatriz DePaula-Silva, Karen Wilcox, Sonja Bröer · FENS Forum 2024

Infections of the CNS represent a significant predisposing factor for the manifestation of acute and chronic seizures. Epilepsy is associated with hippocampal sclerosis and neuronal degeneration; thus a regenerative approach could constitute a novel therapeutic option, involving the promotion of adult neurogenesis within the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus (DG). Although experimental seizures induced by chemoconvulsants or electrical stimulation transiently enhance neurogenesis, the implications of encephalitis and virus-induced seizures remain inadequately elucidated. Accordingly, we em
