This practical presentation examines neuronavigation workflows for precise, reproducible targeting with transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS). Romain Duprat demonstrates the dedicated functions introduced in visor2 version 2.9: calibrating a transducer, creating its target, adjusting beam settings for the three-dimensional transducer representation, and performing target sonication. The session connects treatment planning and targeting with subsequent session review and data export, showing how the software supports the workflow from initial preparation through post-session analysis.

Combining transcranial ultrasonic stimulation of the human basal forebrain with simultaneous electroencephalography

Maximilian Lueckel, Dorina Laurila-Epe, Jennifer Weinberg et al. · FENS Forum 2024

Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) promises non-invasive and highly precise neuromodulation of small, deeply located brain regions like the basal forebrain (BF) – a cholinergic hub that is affected in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Here, we aimed to combine TUS of the BF with simultaneous electroencephalography (TUS-EEG), expecting widespread desynchronization of cortical neuronal activity due to TUS-induced increases in cholinergic BF signalling.TUS transducer placement and targeting were individually planned and monitored using MRI scans as well as acoustic simulations a

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the hippocampal formation is currently investigated as a therapeutic approach for the treatment of memory disorders and epilepsy. Although various neurostimulation protocols have been extensively studied semi-acutely in epileptic patients, their refinement requires more standardized preclinical testing in non-human primates (NHP). However, targeting deep brain structures such as the hippocampal formation in NHP still remains a challenging task. Here, we present a technological framework for submillimeter targeting of the hippocampal formation in macaque monkeys
