maskNMF: a denoise-sparsen-detect pipeline for demixing dense imaging data faster than real time

Amol Pasarkar, Liam Paninski, Pengcheng Zhou, Melissa Wu, Ian Kinsella, Daisong Pan, Jiang Lan Fan, Zhen Wang, Lamiae Abdeladim, Darcy Peterka, Hillel Adesnik, Na Ji · COSYNE 2023

In recent years, many calcium and voltage imaging methods have been developed in pursuit of a central goal of systems neuroscience: to study the function of large populations of neurons. Projective imaging methods, such as Bessel imaging, are a promising class of approaches in pursuit of this goal. These methods simultaneously record neural activity at a wide range of depths in the brain, effectively allowing scientists to image a volume of brain tissue. However, this added capability comes with a trade-off: all observed signals from the volume are projected onto a 2D imaging plane. Therefore,

Hindlimb muscle synergies during split-belt locomotion in the cat: Implications for CPG pattern formation organization

Boris Prilutsky, Alexander Klishko, Claire Hanson, Jonathan Harnie, Ilya Rybak, Alain Frigon · FENS Forum 2024

Previous studies of cat and human locomotion have suggested that the nervous system organizes activities of multiple muscles in five muscle groups (muscle synergies) receiving synergy-specific time-dependent inputs. Two synergies contain flexor muscles and two-joint hamstrings and are active during the swing phase and swing-stance transition; the remaining three synergies consist of extensor muscles and two-joint thigh muscles and are active during the stance phase and stance-swing transition. Given a possible locomotor CPG organization, we hypothesized that split-belt locomotion with faster b
