Olfactory ensheathing cells and fibroblasts: Dynamic partners in nervous system repair and regeneration

Francesca Oieni, Ronak Reshamwala, Megha Shah, Joshua Ingles, Jenny A K Ekberg, James St John · FENS Forum 2024

Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) transplantation is emerging as promising nerve repair therapy, particularly for spinal cord injury (SCI), owing to their intrinsic regenerative capacity within the olfactory system. Perineural fibroblasts are natural partners of OECs within the olfactory nerve and co-transplantation with OECs may improve transplantation repair outcomes. However, little is known about the natural interactions of OECs and fibroblasts during the chaotic state following an injury. Using a mouse model, we temporarily damaged the olfactory nerves using methimazole. At key stages of

Protective effect of some natural antioxidants on olfactory ensheathing cells exposed to amyloid-β toxicity: A potential therapeutic role in preserving neurodegenerative diseases

Rosalia Maria Pellitteri, Maria Assunta Chiacchio, Michela Spatuzza, Giuseppina Raciti, Agata Campisi · FENS Forum 2024

In recent years, attention has grown on neuro-nutraceuticals and their effect on the health of the nervous system, since many compounds are characterized by antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. In the present study the effect of natural compounds (NCs), such as astaxanthin, curcumin and berberine was immunocytochemically assessed on expression of some cytoskeletal proteins, such as vimentin, Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein (GFAP) and nestin (a marker of precursor neural stem cells) in Olfactory Ensheathing Cells (OECs) exposed to amyloid-β (Aβ). In addition, we investigated on tissue tr
