Dentate gyrus inhibitory microcircuit promotes network mechanisms underlying memory consolidation

Hannah Twarkowski,Victor Steininger,Min Jae Kim,Amar Sahay · COSYNE 2022

Sat, Mar 19, 2022

The hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) to CA3 pathway plays a key role in encoding new experiences that are ultimately consolidated in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Experience-dependent changes among excitatory neurons in the DG ‒ CA3 circuit have been intensely studied. However, DG cell axons innervate not only CA3 pyramidal neurons but also inhibitory, parvalbumin positive interneurons (PV IN) to provide strong feed-forward inhibition (FFI) onto CA3 pyramidal neurons. Following learning, FFI onto CA3 is temporarily increased which may be a key element for consolidation and long-term memor

Female brain and healthy aging: The pivotal role of the NPY-1R regulation

Niccolò Di Cintio, Federico Luzzati, Lorenzo Cifarelli, Alessandra Oberto, Ilaria Bertocchi · FENS Forum 2024

Increasing evidence have highlighted significant sex-related differences in animal physiology and behavior, both in health and disease. Despite that, most neuroscience research involving animal models is still conducted using males only. Estrogen (E2) is known to have a protective role in females, mainly by preventing inflammation, however, when hormone levels decline, females become more prone than males to metabolic, cardiovascular and psychiatric diseases. Thanks to our established conditional knockout mouse model (Npy1rrfb mice), in which the gene encoding for the main NPY receptor Y1 is s

Morphological alterations of striatal perineuronal nets in a rat model of parkinsonism and levodopa-induced dyskinesias

Nedime Tugce Bilbay, Banu Cahide Tel, Canan Cakir Aktas, Gul Yalcin Cakmakli, Bulent Elibol · FENS Forum 2024

Aims: L-DOPA-induced dyskinesias (LID) cause disability in Parkinson’s disease patients undergoing L-DOPA treatment. It is known that maladaptive plastic changes in both pre-and post-synaptic components of striatal network contribute to LID. However, the possible role of perineuronal nets (PNN), a member of the tetrapartite synaptic unit, is still elusive. We aimed to investigate alterations in PNN structure mainly encapsulating parvalbumin positive interneurons (PV-IN) in a rat model of LID.Methods: 6-OHDA toxin-injected hemiparkinsonian, sham-operated, and naïve Wistar male rats received eit
