Investigation of the Mechanisms Regulating Postsynaptic Density

Nahid Safari, Christian Tetzlaff · Bernstein Conference 2024

Memory and learning are significantly influenced by long-term changes in synaptic strength, though the exact molecular mechanisms remain unclear. The postsynaptic density (PSD) is a critical component for storing and organizing synaptic long-term changes. The PSD itself is organized into complex nano-clusters, which are modulated during synaptic plasticity. However, the underlying organizational principles yielding such changes and maintaining stability otherwise are still to a large degree unknown. Recent research assumes that liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) might be crucial for PSD for

Dual roles of PirB on pre- and postsynapse in hippocampal asymmetry

Hana Stefanickova, Elodie Le Monnier, Emily Haimerl, Kenta Kobayashi, David Kleindienst, Ryuichi Shigemoto · FENS Forum 2024

Left-right asymmetry is a fundamental feature of higher-order brain structure and function. Within the mouse hippocampus, properties of synapses between pyramidal cells depend on the hemispheric origin of presynaptic inputs. In the CA3-CA1 connection, right-input synapses in stratum radiatum have larger postsynaptic density (PSD) and higher perforation ratio, expressing lower NR2B subunit density, than left-input synapses. The major histocompatibility complex class I (MHCI) and Paired immunoglobulin-like receptor B (PirB) contribute to this asymmetry, suggesting potential trans-synaptic signal
