Oscillations in neural activity are often studied in signals that reflect electrical currents aggregated over neuronal populations (e.g., local field potentials). Ideally, we could straightforwardly analyze oscillations in individual neurons’ firing, by estimating the power spectral density (PSD) of spike trains. Unfortunately, spike train spectra exhibit a global distortion generated by the neuronal recovery period (“RP”, the post-spike drop in spike probability, which can extend beyond the refractory period). This distortion can increase the rate of false negatives and false positives from s

Cognitive and motor functions of the human brain often display non-linear dynamics. Fractal dimension such as Higuchi’s fractal dimension (HFD) has been used as an effective method to probe these nonlinear dynamics and has been used to characterise different diseases. However, there is inconsistency in how HFD varies with age and disease in literature, which could be due to different computational techniques or frequency ranges used in these studies. To resolve this disparity, we investigated the frequency-dependant change of HFD with age for 64-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) data recorded

Conjugated 3α5β neuroactive steroids, such as allopregnanolone and pregnanolone, have garnered significant interest due to their potential therapeutic effects in various neurological conditions. Previously, the neuroprotective effect of 3α5β pregnanolone glutamate (3α5β-PG) was demonstrated in the model of focal cerebral ischemia in immature rats. The goal of this study was to determine electrophysiological correlates of ischemia-induced seizures and validate effects of 3α5β-PG treatment on seizure’s onset and EEG changes in twelve-day-old (P12) Wistar rats. Focal cerebral ischemia was induced

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is characterized by spontaneous recurrent seizures poorly controlled by antiseizure medications in over 30% of patients. The current study aims to investigate the most epileptogenic areas in a TLE animal model using high-density EEG.Sprague Dawley male rats were injected intraperitoneally with pilocarpine to induce the status epilepticus (SE) terminated 30 minutes later by ketamine/diazepam. Two weeks later animals were implanted with epidural electrodes in the frontal cortex and depth electrodes in several temporal areas. Video-EEG recordings (24h, >3 days/week

The aim of this study is to compare and explore the frequency characteristics of non-ordinary states of consciousness (NSCs) induced by hypnosis and bilateral alternating stimulations (BAS) as used in EMDR and the depth of these states. The neurophysiological processes underlying these states are investigated by measuring power spectral density (PSD) in frequency bands of the EEG signal and the deepness of NSC is assessed through visual analog scales on intensity, absorption, dissociation and immersion during memory recall. 25 healthy participants were included in the study. Each participant w
