…neurons, frequently associated with refractory epilepsy. One causative mutation of FCD2 is a gain-of-function mutation in Ras Homologue Enriched in Brain (RHEB), RHEB-p.P37L. Studies on tissue resected from FCD2 patients suggest an elevated NKCC1:KCC2 compared to control tissue. The relative expression of these chloride transporters regulates the chloride reversal potential (ECl). The typical hyperpolarization of ECl during development, due to the upregul

Comparison of SynthSeg performance between 3T and 7T MRI in MR-negative epilepsy

Haniye Shayeste, Stefanie Chambers, Philipp Lazen et al. · FENS Forum 2024

More than 1.5 million people are diagnosed with refractory epilepsy annually, with resective surgery being the most promising treatment option [1,2]. However, the surgery outcomes are not currently satisfying, and an unclear definition of the Epileptic Zone (EZ) is one of the reasons [3]. Patients without clear MRI lesions (MR-negative) are the most challenging and tend to be excluded from the surgery [4]. 7 Tesla (7T) MRI offers potential benefits of more accurate imaging and automated analysis of its images can provide further information for presurgical evaluations due to higher resolution

Neuroscience

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurring, unprovoked seizures. For refractory epilepsy patients, resective surgery does not always result in seizure freedom. The purpose of this study was the localization of seizure activity from sEEG data using dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to aid in resective surgery planning. Analysis was performed on retrospective sEEG data. A band pass filter was applied between 1 and 40 Hz. Individual Component Analysis was performed to reduce noise. A common average reference filter was applied. The data were down sampled to 128 Hz. A two-minute

Neuroscience

The domain of computational neuroscience is one that is awash with data; be it from simulations or experiments, we try to extract patterns and make sense of them. However, two trends have emerged over the past decade. For one, datasets are rapidly increasing in scale, breadth and depth, as more research demands higher resolutions and longer time periods of recording. Two, computational research in the past few decades have attracted immense interest and is increasingly accessible to a greater diversity of people around the world. And, while the knowledge and skills involved in this domain is l
