DREAM protein inhibition as a potential treatment against NAFLD and metabolic syndrome and its associated neurologic signs in mice

José Manuel Hernández Curiel, Ángel Manuel Carrión Rodríguez, Juan Antonio Fernández Cabrera, Inés Sánchez Romero · FENS Forum 2024

High fat diet (HFD) chronic intake induces metabolic syndrome in mice, characterized by a body weight increase and insulin resistance (IR). Furthermore, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is strongly linked to metabolic syndrome appearance. Obesity is a risk factor in the development of neurodegenerative diseases, neuropsychiatric disorders and is associated with cognitive decline. DREAM/kchip3/calsenilin (DREAM) is a multifunctional protein that belongs to the neuronal Ca2+ sensor family. Previous studies have demonstrated the relevance of DREAM in nociception and in learning and memor

Effect of DREAM inhibition on aging and neurodegeneration

Inés Sánchez, Juan Antonio Fernández Cabrera, José Manuel Hernández Curiel, Ángel Manuel Carrión Rodríguez · FENS Forum 2024

Aging, both physiological and pathological, results in a widespread decline in cognitive, sensory, and motor functions. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis is a phenomenon that diminishes with age across various mammalian species and has been proposed as a significant factor linked to age-related cognitive deficits. Our laboratory's preliminary studies reveal that mice lacking the DREAM protein (dream -/-) exhibit cognitive improvement with aging, along with increased neurogenesis and greater development of immature neurons positive for DCX compared to wild-type mice of the same age. To further und
