Hold your breath: A causal investigation of respiratory influence on neural dynamics

Eleni Ioanna Moysiadou, Nikolas Karalis · FENS Forum 2024

Breathing, a quintessential physiological process, has garnered increasing attention for its profound impact on brain function. Recent investigations have established the pivotal role of respiration in orchestrating rhythmic neuronal activity, facilitated by two primary pathways: efferent intracerebral projections from rhythm generators and reafferent inputs via the olfactory pathway. This intricate interplay between respiration and limbic neuronal dynamics has spurred hypotheses regarding the potential role of breathing in supporting the synchronization of limbic circuits.Yet, elucidating the

Self-produced bodily actions and rhythms modulate fear in humans

Maria Alemany, Martijn E. Wokke, Ai Koizumi · FENS Forum 2024

Recent studies in rodents suggest the potential functions of bodily feedback signals to alleviate fear, shedding light on new forms of non-invasive interventions. First, learning proactive coping actions to avoid threats leads to persistent fear-alleviating effects relative to passive extinction procedures (Cain and LeDoux 2007), suggesting that bodily actions could facilitate resilience to learned threats. Second, physiological bodily responses under threat, such as changes in respiration and heart rate, serve as feedback signals to regulate fear (Karalis & Sirota, Nat Comm, 2022; Hsueh e
