Network plasticity and GABAergic cellular dynamics in the different layers of the somatosensory cortex after a spinal cord injury

Marta Zaforas, Elena Fernández-López, Elena Alonso-Calviño, Andrea Misol-Ortiz, Juan Aguilar · FENS Forum 2024

Thoracic complete Spinal Cord Injury (Th-SCI) produces physiological changes in the hindlimb somatosensory cortex (S1HL), which we have characterized as neuronal network hyperexcitability. Moreover, we have found a decreased GAD67 labeling intensity in the infragranular layers of S1HL in chronic Th-SCI. However, it is unknown how decreased labeling of GAD67 could be related to altered inhibitory function of GABAergic interneurons across cortical layers after SCI. The present work has two aims: characterize the physiological effect of a chronic Th-SCI over the different GABAergic neuronal popul

Tactile sensory processing deficits in the Shank3 KO mouse model of autism spectrum disorder

Margarida Falcão, Patrícia Monteiro, Luis Jacinto · FENS Forum 2024

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with social communication deficits, repetitive behaviors, and atypical sensory responses. Around 90% of the patients diagnosed with ASD experience atypical sensory events, with abnormal responses to tactile stimulation. However, the neurological underpinnings of tactile dysfunction in ASD are not yet understood. Using behavior and electrophysiological in vivo recordings, this work aims to promote a better understanding on tactile sensitivity and neuronal responses to glabrous skin tactile stimulation in Shank3 KO mouse
