Back to the present: self-supervised learning in neocortical microcircuits

Kevin Kermani Nejad, Loreen Hertäg, Paul Anastasiades, Rui Ponte Costa · COSYNE 2023

Sensory systems in the mammalian brain exhibit rich representations that ultimately support complex behaviours. Microcircuits across neocortical layers are believed to underlie the development of these representations, but exactly how this occurs remains unclear. In the canonical view of the neocortical microcircuit, first-order thalamic projections target layer 4 (L4), which in turn projects onto layer 2/3 (L2/3) pyramidal cells (PCs) and then finally onto layer 5 (L5) PCs. Although this is a motif found throughout the neocortex, the functional role of this architecture is not known. Here, in

Dissection of a neuronal integrator circuit through correlated light and electron microscopy in larval zebrafish. Part 1: Functional imaging and ultrastructure in the same animal

Accumulating sensory information over long-time scales is a critical component of most circuit computations in the brain across species. It remains poorly understood how such dynamics are implemented mechanistically at the synaptic level. Dissecting such neural circuits in vertebrates requires precise knowledge of functional neural properties and correlating dynamics with the underlying wiring diagram within the same individual animal. Here we combine functional calcium imaging with ultrastructural circuit reconstruction, using a visual motion accumulation task in larval zebrafish. Using conne
