Topography of multisensory convergence throughout the mouse cortex

Kinjal Pravinbhai Patel, Avery Ryoo, Stefan Mihalas, Bryan Tripp · COSYNE 2023

Fri, Mar 10, 2023

Information about an animal's surroundings reaches the brain through multiple sensory modalities. Multimodal information is integrated at multiple stages, including subcortically, and in primary-sensory and higher-order cortical areas. A basic and functionally important feature of multisensory convergence is its topography. For example, in the superior colliculus, visual, auditory, and tactile information converge in register, producing a two-dimensional map that drives saccades. Many studies have demonstrated multimodal convergence elsewhere in the brain, but beyond the superior colliculus, t

Quantifying shared structure between real matrices of arbitrary shape

Jasper Albers, Anno Kurth, Robin Gutzen, Aitor Morales-Gregorio, Michael Denker, Sacha van Albada, Sonja Grün, Markus Diesmann · FENS Forum 2024

Assessing the similarity of matrices is valuable for analyzing the extent to which data sets exhibit common features in tasks such as data clustering, dimensionality reduction, pattern recognition, group comparisons, and graph analysis. Methods proposed for comparing vectors, such as the cosine similarity, can be readily generalized to matrices. However, these approaches usually neglect the inherent two-dimensional structure of matrices. Existing methods that take this structure into account are only well-defined on square, symmetric, positive-definite matrices, limiting the range of applicabi
