Detrimental effects of high-density STAT3-mediated astrocytic corralling in glioblastoma multiforme

Paula Martínez Remedios, Elena Saavedra, Paola Casanova, Meritxell Roig-Martínez, Mario Vázquez, Irina Freitag, Maider Usandizaga, María Ángeles Carrillo-de Sauvage, Carole Escartin, Carlos Barcia · FENS Forum 2024

Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor in adults. One of the factors contributing to the progression is the complex tumor microenvironment. Specially, the coexistence of two cell types, tumoral cells and resident astrocytes, sharing genetic and phenotypical backgrounds. This aspect hinders the phenotypical and functional distinction of both cell types during tumor development. Here, we found a differential expression of the astrocytic markers GFAP and S100β that allowed us to histologically distinguish between tumoral cells and resident astrocytes in GB

An obesity-associated switch in vagal gut-brain communication modulates feeding behavior

Leonie Cabot, Juliet Erlenbeck-Dinkelmann, Diba Borgmann, Lara Kern, Thomas Wunderlich, Henning Fenselau · FENS Forum 2024

In obesity, disruption of gut-brain communication has been associated with overeating, body weight gain, and metabolism disorders. Vagal sensory neurons (VSN) relay nutrient-related signals from the gut to the brain, but how distinct, gut-innervating VSN subtypes are affected by obesity remains unclear. We employed an intersectional genetic approach to investigate obesity-induced functional changes in molecularly defined VSN subtypes that innervate the stomach and small intestine. We demonstrate that overexpression of the suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (Socs3), a crucial regulator of lepti
