A multistep analysis workflow for the classification of cortical LFP events

Sándor Bordé, Robert G. Averkin, Gábor Tamás · FENS Forum 2024

Cortical local fields and oscillatory events are usually analyzed by estimating their spectral characteristics, but these approaches have limited ability to extract all the information carried by the signal. Applying dimensionality reduction methods such as principal component analysis can improve classification performance, help discover hidden patterns, and create new features. We aimed to assemble a multi-step analysis workflow that can transform oscillatory LFP activity into a statistical representation. After filtering and downsampling the LFP signal, waveform segments for the events of i

Rapid eye movement sleep (REM) is often considered as a homogeneous state of sleep, defined by a striking resemblance of its electroencephalogram (EEG) to the one observed in wakefulness. The occurrence of transient events in REM, such as limb twitches or facial and rapid eye movements, supports the view of a paradoxical state of sleep. Here, we investigated the local activity of the primary somatosensory or barrel cortex (S1) in naturally sleeping head-fixed male mice during REM. Through local field potential (LFP) recordings, we uncovered local appearances of spindle waves in the barrel cort
