Impact of two-week repetitive magnetic stimulation on microglia activity and neuronal plasticity

Paolo d'Errico, Christos Galanis, Dimitrios Kleidonas, Andreas Vlachos · FENS Forum 2024

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique for modulating neocortical excitability in humans. Repetitive magnetic stimulations (rMS) applied to tissue cultures trigger functional changes of dendritic spines alongside a potentiation of excitatory neurotransmission. Furthermore, in vivo studies involving both animal models and patients have demonstrated the therapeutic potential of rTMS in treating psychiatric disorders.Despite its use in both neuroscience research and clinical settings, the molecular mechanisms of rTMS-based interventions remain not we

Nicotine exposure during adolescence disrupts the dopaminergic circuitry in the ventral tegmental area

Daiana Rigoni, Renan Campos, Lauren Reynolds, Philippe Faure, Jacques Barik · FENS Forum 2024

Nicotine use during adolescence (ADO) constitutes a risk factor to later develop mood disorders. Yet, the mechanisms underlying the enduring effects of adolescent nicotine exposure remain poorly elucidated. During ADO, the cognitive and goal-directed behaviors are refined in parallel to the development of dopamine (DA) circuitry, and both are uniquely sensitive to disruption by environmental influence during this time. Prolonged nicotine exposure in adult mice favors the appearance of depressive-like symptoms by altering the activity of ventral tegmental area (VTA) DA neurons and nicotinic pat
