Conjunctive theta- and ripple-frequency oscillations across hippocampal strata of foraging rats

Pavithraa Seenivasan,Reshma Basak,Rishikesh Narayanan · COSYNE 2022

Brain rhythms have been postulated to play central roles in animal cognition. A prominently reported dichotomy of hippocampal rhythms exclusively assigns occurrences of theta-frequency (4–12 Hz) oscillations to exploratory behavior and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and of ripple-frequency (120–250 Hz) oscillations to wakeful rest and non-REM sleep. However, due to their differential expression across hippocampal strata, reports of such exclusivity demand validation through simultaneous multi-strata recordings. Here, we assessed co-occurrence of the two oscillations in multi-channel recording

Electrophysiological description of CA1 radiatum/lacunosum-moleculare interneurons

Demi Brizee, Vitor Lopes dos Santos, David Dupret · FENS Forum 2024

The hippocampal CA1 region continually receives a large array of intra and extra-hippocampal inputs. Local GABA-ergic interneurons in the strata radiatum and lacunosum-moleculare are thought to play a key role in structuring this incoming information. However, little is known about the in vivo electrophysiological characteristics of these superficial interneurons during behaviour. Here, we present ongoing work describing the firing properties of interneurons recorded in the stratum radiatum and lacunosum-moleculare in relation to pyramidal neuron activity and network oscillations in freely mov

Linking hippocampal population firing dynamics to ripples laminar profiles

Manfredi Castelli, Vitor Lopes dos Santos, Demi Brizee, Giuseppe Pietro Gava, David Dupret · FENS Forum 2024

The collective spiking activity of hippocampal principal cells supports information processing and integration for memory-guided behaviour. This population spiking is temporally structured and reflect behavioural states. That is, hippocampal principal cell spiking is sparsely paced by theta oscillations during active exploration but tightly synchronised by sharp-wave/ripples (SWRs) during sleep/rest. Notably, previous studies have related SWRs to a current sink in the stratum radiatum, reporting CA3 inputs that serve memory consolidation. Here, we explore whether individual SWRs deviate from t
