Age- and sex-dependent proteome dynamics of nerve injury-induced neuropathic pain in mice

Sabrina Grundtner, Daniel Segelcke, Julia Sondermann, Feng Xian, David Gomez-Varela, Esther Pogatzki-Zahn, Manuela Schmidt · FENS Forum 2024

Neuropathic pain (NeuP) is a global health problem, with clinical manifestations including spontaneous (non-evoked) chronic pain (i.e. burning sensation) and altered somatosensory perception. To date, we still lack a detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving NeuP. In preclinical mouse studies of NeuP, the main behaviour endpoints often fail to reflect typically observed patient symptoms, and the routine use of male subjects across diverse age ranges likely masks potential age- and sex-dependent variations. We aim to investigate the impact of age and sex on pain-related behavio

Unveiling the role of microglia in synaptic pruning in multiple sclerosis

Catarina Barros, Ainhoa Alberro, Adelaide Fernandes · FENS Forum 2024

Microglia are keen responders in numerous neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions, including in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). While previous studies hinted about microglia involvement in synaptic elimination, their correlation with the appearance of cognitive deficits in MS remains unclear. Here, we focused on understanding the impact of microglia in MS synapse pruning in the cognitive-related region, the hippocampus, using postmortem tissue of MS patients. Hippocampal samples were obtained from the Netherlands Brain Bank, including non-demented control (NDC) and MS donors that were mat
