Microbial modulation of zebrafish behavior and brain development

Judith S. Eisen · University of Oregon

Tue, May 16, 2023 · 15:00 UTC

There is growing recognition that host-associated microbiotas modulate intrinsic neurodevelopmental programs including those underlying human social behavior. Despite this awareness, the fundamental processes are generally not understood. We discovered that the zebrafish microbiota is necessary for normal social behavior. By examining neuronal correlates of behavior, we found that the microbiota restrains neurite complexity and targeting of key forebrain neurons within the social behavior circuitry. The microbiota is also necessary for both localization and molecular functions of forebrain mic

Extracellular matrix and microglia interactions in stroke recovery

Egor Dzyubenko, Dirk M. Hermann · FENS Forum 2024

Stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability, with effective therapies hampered by an incomplete understanding of brain recovery mechanisms. Emerging evidence indicates that the interactions between the brain extracellular matrix (ECM) and glial cells1 critically contribute to post-stroke neuroplasticity and can help promote stroke recovery. We investigated the role of perineuronal nets (PNNs), facet-like ECM layers surrounding fast-spiking interneurons, in neurological recovery following focal cerebral ischemia in mice. Using superresolution stimulated emission depletion (STED), stru
