Representational drift from a population view of memory consolidation

Denis Alevi, Felix Lundt, Henning Sprekeler · COSYNE 2023

In the classical views of systems memory consolidation, memories are transferred from the hippocampus to cortex and between cortical areas for long-term storage [1]. But with the advance of neuronal recording techniques, it has become apparent that most variables of the outside world are learned and represented in multiple brain regions simultaneously. In some brain regions, these representations change dynamically while the behavior of the animal remains stable [2]. Here, we propose a population perspective on memory consolidation that reproduces many features of this “representational drift”

Sleep slow oscillation-spindle coupling precedes spindle-ripple coupling during development

Julia Fechner, Maria Paz Contreras, Candela Zorzo, Marion Inostroza, Jan Born · FENS Forum 2024

Sleep supports systems memory consolidation through the precise temporal coordination of oscillatory events during slow-wave sleep, i.e., the neocortical slow oscillations (SOs), thalamic spindles, and hippocampal ripples. Beneficial effects of sleep on memory are also observed in infants although the contributing regions, especially hippocampus and frontal cortex, are immature. Here, we examined in rats the development of these oscillatory events and their coupling during early life.EEG and hippocampal LFP were recorded during sleep in male rats at postnatal days (PD)26 and 32, roughly corres
