Dynamics of prefrontal cortex and dorsolateral striatum in the automation of reference memory

Maxime Villet, Benjamin Azoulay, Jacques Barik, Hélène Marie, Ingrid Bethus · FENS Forum 2024

Working memory is a transient representation of recently experienced that undergoes processes to make the information usable for goal-oriented behavior. Prior research emphasizes the prefrontal cortex's importance in working memory. This was demonstrated by inhibition (Bauer et al, 1976) and recording (Miller et al, 1996) experiments. However, most studies focus on the short-term aspect, neglecting the reference memory that got a crucial role in information utilization in working memory (Yoon et al,2008). Our investigation digs into the evolution of encoding learned information in reference me

Global brain c-Fos mapping reveals differences in brain network engagement during navigation using different visual cue classes

Urszula Włodkowska, Bartosz Zglinicki, Edyta Balcerek, Rafał Czajkowski · FENS Forum 2024

Navigation based on the formation, storage, and retrieval of spatial information is crucial for the survival of many species. We use a modification of a fully automated T-maze task for mice requiring flexible processing of visual information about the external environment. In our experimental design mice are presented with extra maze visual cues of different levels of complexity - general contexts and salient landmarks. They are conditioned to navigate based on the visual cues, acting against the spontaneous tendency to alternate. The animals are presented with pseudo-random sequences of turns
