Learning-to-learn emerges from learning to efficiently reuse neural representations

Vishwa Goudar,Barbara Peysakhovich,Elizabeth A. Buffalo,David Freedman,Xiao-Jing Wang · COSYNE 2022

Learning-to-learn, a progressive acceleration of learning while solving a series of similar problems, represents a core process of knowledge acquisition. To investigate its underlying brain mechanism, we trained a recurrent neural network (RNN) model on a series of arbitrary sensorimotor mapping problems. The network displayed an exponential speedup in learning across problems. The neural substrate of a sensorimotor task schema emerges as low-dimensional neural representations of task variables that are shared across problems. Its reuse limits the connection weight changes required to learn ne

Incorporating new with old knowledge – curricular learning in anterior cingulate cortex

Elisabeth Abs, Roman Boehringer, Benjamin F. Grewe · FENS Forum 2024

When encountering new situations, animals utilize previously acquired knowledge to solve the new task. To study how new task requirements are incorporated with prior knowledge we used a curricular learning paradigm: a complex task is divided into simpler tasks which are learned step-by-step with increasing complexity, adding a new task feature with every step. The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) has been indicated to store representations of task features as well as being important for task schema retrieval and assimilation. However how new task feature representations and their associated beha
