Central SELENOT expression regulates gonadotrope axis function, sexual behavior, and fertility in male and female mice

Ben Yamine Mallouki, Loubna Boukhzar, Ludovic Dumont, David Godefroy, Maria Manfredi-Lozano, Yves Tillet, Luca Grumolato, Nathalie Rives, Fatiha Chigr, Vincent Prévot, Youssef Anouar · FENS Forum 2024

Reproductive disorders are associated with neuroendocrine dysregulation in the hypothalamic-hypophysis-gonadal (HHG) axis, which can result from a defective production and action of the neuropeptide gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), the master regulator of reproduction. We have previously shown that SELENOT, a new thioredoxin-like selenoprotein highly expressed in endocrine and neuroendocrine cells, plays a role in hormone secretion. However, whether SELENOT is involved in neuroendocrine regulatory mechanisms that impinge on vital functions such as reproduction, is totally unknown. We fou

The effect of pubertal development on spatial reasoning

Jorge Borrani, Gabriela Sanchez, Gonzalo Guerra, Aída García, Candelaria Ramírez, Pablo Valdez · FENS Forum 2024

Spatial reasoning is the capacity to manipulate visual representations. Performance on spatial reasoning tasks has been related to testosterone, which increases in males during pubertal development. Nevertheless, it is not clear if children of different pubertal development have indeed differences in pubertal development, since the studies have not controlled the age and education of participants.Participants were 36 girls and 28 boys (10.28±0.98 years; 5.13±1.0 completed school years). The score on the Pubertal Development Scale was used to create high and low pubertal development groups, whi

Hippocampal TACR3 and systemic testosterone in modulating anxiety-associated synaptic plasticity

Magdalena Wojtas, Marta Diaz-González, Shira Knafo · FENS Forum 2024

Patients with tachykinin receptor 3 (TACR3) mutations experience pubertal failure, depression, and anxiety, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, we found that rats with severe anxiety have reduced expression of TACR3 in the hippocampus. We also observed that TACR3 expression in the hippocampus increases in males during sexual development, parallel to changes in anxiety and serum testosterone levels. Although TACR3 is not highly expressed at synapses, its regulation significantly impacts synapse number, function, and plasticity. In particular, inhibiting TACR3

Reproduction, gene expression, and locomotor activity in Syrian hamsters: Impact of different Hypericum perforatum L. doses

Bulent Gunduz, Berrak Damla Yağan, Betul Onder, Tanay Uzgan · FENS Forum 2024

Hypericum perforatum L. has numerous physiological effects and contains ingredients like hyperforin and hypericin. Serotonin, dopamine, and GABA were among the neurotransmitters that it affects. Along with these effects, there are also deficiencies in the mechanism pertaining to the relationship between the hormone leptin and H. perforatum, which inhibits the accumulation of fat tissue. Its effects on food intake and weight gain, as well as the mechanism underlying the interaction between leptin and NPY/AgRP genes in the hypothalamus, are poorly understood. There were five groups in the study.

Role of testosterone and cortisol in formula car drivers for achieving high performance in a real competitive situation

Yuuki Ooishi, Seiji Matsumura, Makio Kashino, Naoki Saijo · FENS Forum 2024

Mental states of athletes are important for winning in real competitive situations. Testosterone, cortisol, and the testosterone-cortisol ratio (T/CORT) are strongly related to mental states. Therefore, we hypothesized that they would modify the performance of athletes in a real competitive situation. In this study, we examined the relationship between the testosterone, cortisol, and T/CORT levels and the performance of two professional formula car drivers, who were members of a team participating in Super Formula (a kind of formula race series in Japan). We measured the salivary levels of tes

Testosterone rescues anxiety-related blood brain barrier differences in the nucleus accumbens

Haissa de Castro, Dogukan Hazar Ülgen, Carmen Sandi · FENS Forum 2024

The nucleus accumbens (NAc), a brain region implicated in the regulation of anxiety-related behaviors, has been found to be susceptible to blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability in psychopathologies. Additionally, the positive effects of testosterone on BBB function and anxiety related behaviours is still controversial. In this study, exploiting natural phenotypic variation in anxiety-like behaviors in outbred Wistar male rats, we aimed at investigating whether testosterone plays a role in anxiety-related BBB disfunction. We classified animals as high (HA) or low anxious (LA) according to the
