Behavioral analysis of growth-retarded mice with congenital hypothyroidism using IntelliCage

Fumihiko Maekawa, Kazuaki Nakamura, Kenichi Kobayashi · FENS Forum 2024

Persistent organic pollutants like dioxin, PCBs, PFOS, PFOA, and brominated flame retardants are known to disrupt thyroid hormones. Previous animal studies have reported their effects on activity and cognitive functions. Our research group utilizes IntelliCage, an automated behavior recording system, to assess exposure effects of metals such as arsenic, methylmercury, and dioxins. In this study, we investigated how hypothyroidism induces behavioral abnormalities in growth-retarded (grt) mice with congenital thyroid hypoplasia. Grt mice, characterized by a tyrosylprotein sulfotransferase 2 (Tps

Investigating how tanycytes integrate central thyroid hormone signals

The hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis is one of several hormone regulatory systems connecting the hypothalamus to its peripheral target organs and plays a fundamental role in maintaining the normal serum levels of circulating thyroid hormones (THs) and thus the euthyroid state. At the interface of the HPT - the third ventricle - reside the tanycytes, specialised ependymoglial cells. Their anatomical location allows tanycytes to act as gatekeepers of the HPT and regulate both the output of thyroid releasing hormone (TRH) and the entry of peripheral THs to the brain. Recently, it was sho

Aims: Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder, exhibits cognitive decline via plaque formation, inflammation, cholinergic deficits, and oxidative stress. Curcumin, derived from turmeric, exhibits neuroprotective properties, potentially counteracting AD and Parkinson's disease. With anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, insulin-sensitizing properties, it inhibits protein aggregation. Despite the crucial role of thyroid hormones in memory, there is limited electrophysiological evidence supporting these effects. Methods: This study, involving adult Wistar rats, aimed to explore the impac
