High dose fish oil supplementation decreases amyloid beta accumulation in retinal blood vessels in 5xFAD mice

Irena Jovanovic Macura, Jelena Ciric, Nikola Milovanovic, Tamara Major, Milka Perovic, Sanja Ivkovic · FENS Forum 2024

The increased accumulation of amyloid b (Ab) in retinal blood vessels in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients and AD animal models is in significant correlation with the brain amyloid deposits associated with the cognitive impairment in AD. Ab accumulation in blood vessels can be the result of impaired transcytosis and/or the dysfunctional ocular glymphatic system in AD. The supplementation with high-dose fish oil (FO) have shown significant effects in diminishing AD pathologies but also serving as the blood vessel fortifier. We analyzed the changes in expression of major facilitator superfamily

Unveiling microvascular occlusions in traumatic brain injury: Insights into blood-brain barrier permeability using super-bright nanoparticles

Atonia Clarissa Wehn, Martina Fetting, Andrey Klymchenko, Nikolaus Plesnila, Igor Khalin · FENS Forum 2024

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) manifests with reduced cerebral blood flow and heightened blood-brain-barrier (BBB) permeability, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study explores the involvement of microvascular occlusions (mVOs) in the traumatic penumbra and their contribution to these processes. mVOs were visualized in C57BL/6 mice by systemic administration of super-bright 30 nm lipidic nanodroplets (LnDs) one hour following controlled cortical impact TBI. Brains were investigated by fluorescent confocal imaging and correlative light-electron microscopy (CLEM). Additionally, c
