Lipid composition diversity of the human brain white matter tracts

Marina Zavolskova, Olga Efimova, Gleb Vladimirov, Elena Stekolshchikova, Philipp Khaitovich · FENS Forum 2024

Exploring the molecular aspects of the human brain’s structural arrangement can provide insights into its underlying functional mechanisms. The search for differences in white matter regions often focuses on measuring myelin layer thicknesses or parameters of diffusion tensor imaging. Lipids are vital components of cell membranes and are involved in important physiological functions such as signal transmission, maintaining membrane structure, and supporting the development of neurons. This research involved analyzing the distribution of lipids in different areas of the human brain, specificall

Moderately high levels of plasma methylglyoxal are associated with lacunar infarcts – The Maastricht Study

Eline Berends, Simone J. P. M. Eussen, Walter H. Backes, Peter C. Dagnelie, Jacobus F. A. Jansen, Bastiaan E. de Galan, Marleen M. J. van Greevenbroek, Sebastian Köhler, Miranda Schram, Anke Wesselius, Robert J. van Oostenbrugge, Sébastien Foulquier, Casper G. Schalkwijk · FENS Forum 2024

Methylglyoxal (MGO), a by-product of glycolysis and major precursor in the formation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), is increased during ageing and in diabetes and plays a role in peripheral microvascular dysfunction. Whether MGO affects the brain microvasculature is unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate whether higher plasma MGO concentrations are cross-sectionally associated with markers for cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and with cognitive impairment. In participants of the Maastricht Study, a population-based cohort study oversampled with type 2 diabetes (age=59.
