Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a range of neurodevelopmental disorders affecting social communication and behavior. Brain network dysfunctions are supported as a neurobiological basis for ASDs. Thus, functional connectivity (FC) studies are pivotal for unraveling autism-related large-scale network dynamics. Although functional imaging studies during development can be instrumental for autism diagnosis, longitudinal studies of FC consolidation over development to adulthood are missing in mice. SHANK3 is a postsynaptic scaffolding protein of excitatory synapses. Its deletion or mutation is

The iGABASnFR is a genetically encoded optical sensor that can detect the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. Its recent improvements have allowed it to reliably monitor GABA release evoked by electric stimulation (Marvin et al., Nature Methods 2019) or epileptiform activity (Magloire et al., Curr Biol. 2023). Here, we employed iGABASnFR2, both neuronal and astrocytic variants, virally expressed in the hippocampus or somatosensory cortical region for ~4 weeks of in vivo transduction for high-resolution multiplexed two-photon excitation imaging in acute hippocampal slices or in the barrel cortex

Bilateral sensory information is indispensable for navigating the world. In most mammals, signals sensed by either side of the midline will ultimately reach the cortex where they will be integrated for perception and appropriate action selection. Even though information transferred across the hemispheres is routed through the corpus callosum, how and which microcircuits are key in integrating it across development is not well understood. Here we identify an essential role for layer 1 NDNF+ inhibitory cells of mice in controlling the bilaterally evoked whisker stimulation in layer (L)4 before,

Multisensory integration is a sensory processing mechanism that integrate input information from different sensory modalities, occurring during sensory reception and perception. However, the underlying neuronal circuit to integrate sensory information is still unknown. We featured anterolateral visual area (AL), which has axonal projection from primary sensory cortexes, and try to clarify the mechanism underpinning sensory information processing and integration in AL. We first visualized neuronal response to sensory input (whisker stimulation and auditory representation) in AL by in vivo Ca2+

Integration of information across different senses is a common property of cortical neurons. Somatosensory input impacts on auditory cortical processing through a mechanism that suppresses sound-evoked activity (Lohse et al., 2021). We carried out a number of experiments to investigate a) the perceptual implications of this crossmodal integrative process and b) its context dependence. In order to assess whether somatosensory suppression of sound-evoked activity affected the ability of mice to detect acoustic stimuli, we first performed a near-threshold sound detection experiment.
