In Astronomy and Astrophysics

This workshop connects observations of young galaxies and large-scale structure with cosmological simulations. JWST, ALMA and wide-field surveys motivate discussion of early galaxy populations, gas and dust, reionization, protoclusters and their environments. Optical spectroscopy adds constraints on circumgalactic gas and chemical enrichment. Participants will compare theoretical predictions with observations to understand how the cosmic web and baryonic matter evolve together. Abstract and initial registration submissions close on 4 December 2026; final registration and fee payment close on 2

Galaxies in pieces

Frédéric Bournaud · CEA-Saclay

Young galaxies often appear as irregular collections of large clumps, unlike the regular spirals and ellipticals common today. This seminar examines whether those clumps represent small galaxies assembling through mergers or fragmentation within an existing massive galaxy. Numerical simulations allow both mechanisms and connect them to the emergence of the Hubble sequence.

Galaxies amplified by gravitational lenses

Mirka Dessauges-Zavadsky · Geneva

Gravitational lensing lets astronomers resolve the dense, turbulent molecular clouds and giant star-forming clumps of young galaxies. This seminar combines Hubble, JWST and ALMA observations with simulations of unstable, gas-rich disks. It examines how unusually massive clouds and efficient star formation contribute to the assembly of galactic stellar mass over cosmic time.
