Abstract

Neurogenesis persists in the olfactory bulb (OB) and hippocampus throughout life in the mammalian brain. Neural stem cells (NSCs) in the postnatal subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) maintain adult neurogenesis in the OB and DG, respectively. Adult neurogenesis is required for innate olfactory behaviors and spatial learning and memory. Rab18, a Ras-like small GTPase, is essential for the development of the mammalian nervous system. Whether Rab18 also regulates adult neurogenesis and related behaviors remains elusive. Here, we found that adult neurogenesis in the OB and DG was decreased in Rab18 null mice. Furthermore, odor discrimination and spatial learning and memory were defective in Rab18 null mice. Our data suggest that Rab18 is required for adult neurogenesis and OB- and DG-dependent behaviors.
