Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interactions, communication challenges, and restricted, repetitive behaviors and interests. Behavioral testing in animal models is crucial for understanding neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, including ASD. While numerous tests assess social behaviors, a core ASD phenotype, fewer tools exist for evaluating adherence to specific behaviors and interests. To address this gap, we tried to develop a behavioral assessment system focused on evaluating interest adherence in mice. Our method involves presenting four video stimuli on tablets in an open field: two videos feature periodically moving objects presented diagonally opposite, and the other two displays randomly moving or static objects. We then measure the time spent in areas associated with each video, aiming to identify conditions that increase engagement with the periodically moving stimuli. This report outlines the rationale behind our approach and details the video conditions explored in our experiments.
