About
A two-year fellowship helps African faculty apply AI to physical sciences, mathematics, engineering and basic biomedical research. Fellows spend one year in Ann Arbor and then return to Africa. Research on disease diagnosis, prevention or treatment is excluded. Phase 1 closes 5 October 2026 at 23:59 EDT; the expected start is July 2027.

Apply with a supervisor or host
Covers: U-M residence includes a USD 35,000 annual stipend, insurance, housing, visa and travel support. Additional research training support is available; returnees receive a USD 50,000 pilot grant.
Host location: United States
One year at the University of Michigan, followed by work at the African home institution. A Michigan host is optional in Phase 1 but required in Phase 2, together with home-institution leave and return approval.

Applicants need a primary African university or equivalent research appointment and a PhD before July 2027. The earlier of PhD conferral and first faculty appointment must be on or after 1 July 2017.
