About

Aalto University's Department of Information and Communications Engineering recruits a doctoral researcher in the AEGIS Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network on adaptive grid-interactive edge datacenter fleets. AEGIS develops a programmable infrastructure layer for safe, runtime-verified control of a site's power electronics, cooling and AI hardware; an intelligence layer that turns real-time grid signals into facility actions without breaking service; and a fleet orchestration layer that lets many independently owned sites act as one virtual power plant.

This doctoral project, End-to-End Energy Modeling for Distributed AI Services, builds compositional energy models spanning disaggregated radio access network components, transport networks and datacenter hardware, exposed through a low-latency query API that returns the end-to-end energy and carbon cost of an AI service, with targets of under 10% prediction error on the Aalto and Ericsson testbeds and responses under 100 milliseconds. The researcher joins the Cloud and Network Computing group of Assistant Professor Gopika Premsankar, advised by Professor Riku Jäntti, with planned three-month secondments at Ericsson in Finland (around May 2028, with Tomas Mecklin) and TU Wien (around May 2029, with Ivona Brandić).

The application deadline is 15 December 2026 at 23:59 EET; applications are reviewed in batches and the call can close early if the position is filled.

Requirements

Master's degree in computer science, communications engineering, telecommunications or a related field with a CGPA of at least 4/5; coursework or project experience in AI and machine learning, including DNN architectures and model training; fluent English. MSCA rules: no doctoral degree at recruitment, and no residence or main activity in Finland for more than 12 of the 36 months before recruitment (with the programme's stated exceptions).
