Multiple Postdoctoral Fellowships and PhD Scholarships: Mathematical Modelling of Marine Food Webs and Climate Change

Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Apply by Sep 10, 2026

Job Description

The HFSP-funded Biomathematics Research Group invites doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to model ecological and evolutionary responses of intertidal and marine food webs to climate change. Projects integrate quantitative ecology, trait-based networks, biodiversity surveys and oceanographic data across the California, Humboldt, Benguela and Canary upwelling systems. Postdoctoral applicants need a relevant PhD completed in 2023 or later, quantitative ecological expertise and MATLAB, R or Python skills.

PhD applicants need a quantitative MSc; an MSc in Ecology or Biological Sciences alone is explicitly insufficient. The three-year awards provide ZAR 350,000–400,000 annually for postdoctoral fellows and ZAR 250,000–300,000 for doctoral scholars. Expected starts fall between 1 December 2026 and 28 February 2027. Submit the documents specified in the official call as one PDF by 10 September 2026; the source provides the application instructions.

Requirements

  • Postdoctoral: relevant PhD obtained in 2023 or later and quantitative ecological expertise. Doctoral: MSc in a quantitative discipline
  • strong programming skills and transcripts
  • an MSc in Ecology or Biological Sciences alone is not eligible. Applicable university English-language admission requirements must be met.
