Charlie Wilson examines how artificial intelligence affects energy transitions and carbon emissions, from data centres to the wider economy. The talk evaluates evidence behind competing claims, identifies optimism bias in assessments extending beyond data-centre electricity use, and presents research quantifying AI’s effects on global emissions pathways to 2050. It considers how aligning AI development with climate action changes the feasibility and cost of meeting long-term climate targets. GHGT-18 is an international forum for carbon capture, utilisation and storage, bringing together scientific research, demonstration projects, business strategy and policy across the CCUS value chain. AGU26 brings the Earth and space science community to San Francisco on 7–11 December 2026 for research presentations, scientific exchange, workshops and professional development. A fundamental problem in neuroscience is understanding how the properties of individual neurons and synapses contribute to neuronal circuit dynamics and behavior. In recent years we have done both computational and experimental studies that demonstrate that the same physiological output can arise from multiple, degenerate solutions, and that individual animals with similar behavior can nonetheless have quite different sets of underlying circuit parameters. Most recently, we have been studying the resilience of individual animals to perturbations such as temperature and high potassium concentrations. This has revealed that extreme environmental experiences can produce long-term changes in circuit performance that can be hidden, or “cryptic” unless the animals are again challenged or perturbed. Our present experimental and computational work is designed to understand differential resilience in natural, wild-caught animals in response to climate change, and shows long-lasting influences of the animals’ temperature history. An undergraduate research fellowship examines air-temperature records across São Paulo state within a project on climate change and extreme-rainfall impacts. Tasks include gathering long meteorological time series, checking data quality, exploratory statistics, clustering, spatial interpolation and GIS mapping. The call is restricted to students already enrolled at FFLCH-USP who can devote at least 20 hours per week. The planned start is December 2026. Applications are accepted until 25 September 2026 using the email instructions on the investigator’s notice; applicants submit a Lattes CV, transcript and one-page statement of interest.

Join the African Climate and Development Initiative and its People in Nature and Climate Lab as a Chapter Scientist supporting the Africa chapter of IPCC AR7. The fellow will synthesize evidence on climate impacts, projected risks, adaptation and loss and damage, with particular attention to water and infrastructure. Duties include research synthesis, figures, publications and coordination with chapter authors. The fellowship offers ZAR 480,000 annually for up to two years, renewed subject to progress, and requires a start by 1 November 2026. Apply by 30 September with one PDF containing a suitability letter, CV and publications, academic records and two referee contacts. Later applications may be considered only if the vacancy remains unfilled.

The IGS is accepting proposals to co-sponsor cryosphere workshops, summer schools and related events in 2027. Support is normally up to GBP 3,000 per event and can cover organization, participation support or student and early-career prizes. Priority goes to events linked to IGS symposia or co-sponsored meetings. Apply by 1 October 2026. This is the 2027 round of a recurring event-support programme.

The Simons Foundation's Mathematics and Physical Sciences division invites letters of intent for fundamental research addressing scientific knowledge gaps relevant to solar radiation management. Priorities include environmentally benign materials for stratospheric aerosol injection and cirrus-cloud thinning, laboratory physicochemical characterization, approaches to minimize cirrus formation, near-field turbulence modelling, and integration of improved aerosol and turbulence representations into global models. In-situ aerosol-release field experiments and social-science research are outside the call's scope.

Study atmospheric reactive gases and their effects on air quality and climate. The role combines long-term and campaign observations, including work associated with Cape Grim and RV Investigator, with optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and data analysis. Research covers ozone, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and their links with aerosol chemistry. The indefinite appointment is based in Aspendale; flexible or part-time arrangements may be considered. Salary is AUD 135,000–158,000 plus 15.4% superannuation.

SNSF Ambizione supports early-career researchers leading an independent project at a Swiss higher education institution for up to four years. Funding can cover the researcher’s salary and project costs, or project costs alone where appropriate. The final Ambizione call opened on 3 August 2026 and closes on 3 November 2026 at 17:00 CET. Projects may start between September 2027 and September 2028. This is the final call before a replacement funding scheme, not an indefinitely recurring open programme.

This annual GBP 15,000 fellowship supports post-PhD field research in physical geography in Arctic or high-mountain environments. Priority is given to studies of past or present environmental change.
