Postdoctoral researcher position
Postdoctoral Researcher, Ecology and Genetics
University of Oulu
About
The Ecology and Genetics Research Unit at the University of Oulu recruits a postdoctoral researcher in conservation genomics of the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa saimensis), which lives only in Lake Saimaa, Finland, and is challenged by climate change, dangerous fishing gear, disturbance of breeding and low genetic diversity. The position belongs to the EU LIFE project LIFE SOS, led by the University of Oulu with the University of Eastern Finland, which aims to grow the population to about 700 seals by 2032 by combining genetic research, population modelling and practical conservation.
The postdoc establishes SNP-based molecular approaches for DNA-based monitoring of the seals, carries out whole-genome analyses of pup mortality, works with national and international stakeholders, supports and teaches Master's and PhD students, and takes part in external funding calls. The fixed-term position runs from 1 February 2027 (or as soon as possible) until 31 January 2031, at levels 5–6 of the Finnish universities' scale with a starting gross salary of about €3,800–4,200 per month and a six-month trial period.
Applications are due by 30 November 2026 (23:59 Finnish time).
Requirements
Doctoral degree in molecular biology or genetics, zoology, conservation, ecology or a related field, obtained no more than 10 years ago.
