About

The Botanical Garden of the University of Oulu's Biodiversity Unit, working closely with the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit, recruits a project researcher in genomics of endangered plant species for PLEDGE (Plants on the Edge), an EU Interreg NPA project in which botanical gardens, conservation agencies and universities from Ireland, Iceland and Finland develop transnational ex situ conservation through seed banking, cryopreservation, micropropagation and conservation genomics.

The researcher uses genomic approaches to assess genetic diversity within and among populations of threatened plants, identify genetically important populations and design collection strategies that maximise the genetic diversity preserved in seed banks, cryopreservation facilities and other ex situ collections, including DNA extraction, genotyping or sequencing (SNP genotyping, reduced-representation sequencing, target capture or whole-genome sequencing), protocol optimisation and bioinformatic analysis.

The researcher joins the Wildlife Genomics group (conservation genomics, environmental and ancient DNA, biodiversity monitoring, evolutionary genetics). The fixed-term position runs from 1 January 2027 (or as agreed) until 31 December 2028, with a starting gross salary of about €3,700–4,000 per month. Applications are due by 30 November 2026 (23:59 Finnish time).

Requirements

Doctoral degree in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, conservation biology, bioinformatics or a closely related field. Attach a motivation letter, CV, list of publications and contact details of two references.
