Job Description

The Varela lab is hiring a full-time research assistant to perform electrophysiology and pharmacology experiments in rats to investigate the link between sleep architecture, memory consolidation and thalamic neural activity. This project is part of a wider research program in the lab that seeks to provide mechanistic insight on the role of sleep dysfunction in Alzheimer’s Disease and related disorders. This is a great opportunity for students looking to strengthen their research skills and academic competitiveness for PhD and MD-PhD Programs in Neuroscience.
Start date flexible in the Fall of 2023 or early 2024; 1 year with possibility of renewal.
The Varela laboratory investigates the cellular and network mechanisms of learning and memory in rodents. We use a broad range of state-of-the-art methods, including multi-site extracellular recordings in freely behaving rats, closed-loop manipulations of brain activity, optogenetics, and computational approaches http://www.varelalab.org/

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a major in Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • one of the Biological Sciences or equivalent. Strong organizational skills and motivation to work in a diverse and collaborative research environment. Neuroscience research experience with rodents preferred.
