Abstract

Spin-one-half systems provide a common mathematical language for stationary qubits. This introductory lecture explains how quantum information can be represented, manipulated and measured using atomic energy levels or defects in solids. It connects the formalism to basic quantum-processor components and to magnetic-field sensors based on controlled spins.
