Abstract

This lecture develops the harmonic-oscillator description of travelling quantum signals. It compares information encoded in individual photons with information encoded in field components, introduces methods for characterising optical quantum states and reviews enabling detectors. Two-photon examples illustrate how entanglement can be measured.
