Abstract
The ALPINE survey illustrates how an astronomical survey develops from its initial scientific questions through telescope observations to published findings. The seminar follows ALMA measurements of gas and star formation in more than one hundred early galaxies to explain how large observational programmes investigate galaxy evolution.
