Abstract

Nearby systems can help interpret distant galaxies, but the analogy can conceal important differences and observational limitations. This seminar examines local compact galaxy groups and active galactic nuclei accreting above the Eddington rate. It shows how unresolved structure, limited spectral information and sensitivity can complicate claims about apparently similar objects in the early Universe.
