Abstract
Semi-analytical galaxy models separate the growth of dark-matter haloes from the evolution of the ordinary matter inside them. The seminar explains merger trees, the analytical treatment of baryonic processes, the historical motivation and assumptions of this approach, the observations it seeks to reproduce, and selected recent results.
