The AI Department of the Donders Centre for Cognition (DCC), embedded in the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and the School of Artificial Intelligence at Radboud University Nijmegen are looking for a researcher in reinforcement learning with an emphasis on safety and robustness, an interest in natural computing as well as in applications in neurotechnology and other domains such as robotics, healthcare and/or sustainability. Where Cognitive Neuroscience Meets Industry: Navigating the Intersections of Academia and Industry
In this talk, Mirta will share her journey from her education a mathematically-focused high school to her currently unconventional career in London, emphasizing the evolution from a local education in Croatia to international experiences in the US and UK. We will explore the concept of interdisciplinary careers in the modern world, viewing them through the framework of increasing demand, flexibility, and dynamism in the current workplace. We will underscore the significance of interdisciplinary research for launching careers outside of academia, and bolstering those within. I will challenge the conventional norm of working either in academia or industry, and encourage discussion about the opportunities for combining the two in a myriad of career opportunities. I’ll use examples from my own and others’ research to highlight opportunities for early career researchers to extend their work into practical applications. Such an approach leverages the strengths of both sectors, fostering innovation and practical applications of research findings. I hope these insights can offer valuable perspectives for those looking to navigate the evolving demands of the global job market, illustrating the advantages of a versatile skill set that spans multiple disciplines and allows extensions into exciting career options.

In the lecture Yvette Roke and Jamie Hoefakker will discuss the positive and negative effects of daily stress on mental health. They will also highlight which characteristics are likely to cause more stress related issues, and why recovery time is very important. They will give an understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in relation to daily stress and they will discuss the app, SAM the stress autism mate, developed and investigated (SCED design) in co-creation with their patients with ASD.

Given the millions of people who suffer from pain every day, wishing only, “that it should stop”, the need to find more effective treatments cannot be understated." "‘New treatments for pain’ will bring together approximately 120 people from the commercial, academic, and not-for-profit sectors to share current knowledge, identify future directions, and enable collaboration, providing delegates with meaningful and practical ways to accelerate their own work into developing treatments for pain.
Root causes and possible solutions to academic bullying in higher education
Academic bullying is a serious issue that affects all disciplines and people of all levels of experience. To create a truly safe, productive, and vibrant environment in academia requires coordinated and collaborative input as well as the action of a variety of stakeholders, including scholarly communities, funding agencies, and institutions. This talk will focus on a framework of integrated responding, in which stakeholders as responsible and response-able parties could proactively collaborate and coordinate to reduce the incidence and consequences of academic bullying while at the same time building constructive academic cultures. The outcome of such a framework would be to create novel entities and actions that accelerate successful responses to academic bullying.

Interdisciplinary College
The Interdisciplinary College is an annual spring school which offers a dense state-of-the-art course program in neurobiology, neural computation, cognitive science/psychology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and philosophy. It is aimed at students, postgraduates and researchers from academia and industry. This year's focus theme "Flexibility" covers (but not be limited to) the nervous system, the mind, communication, and AI & robotics. All this will be packed into a rich, interdisciplinary program of single- and multi-lecture courses, and less traditional formats.

PiVR: An affordable and versatile closed-loop platform to study unrestrained sensorimotor behavior
PiVR is a system that allows experimenters to immerse small animals into virtual realities. The system tracks the position of the animal and presents light stimulation according to predefined rules, thus creating a virtual landscape in which the animal can behave. By using optogenetics, we have used PiVR to present fruit fly larvae with virtual olfactory realities, adult fruit flies with a virtual gustatory reality and zebrafish larvae with a virtual light gradient. PiVR operates at high temporal resolution (70Hz) with low latencies (<30 milliseconds) while being affordable (<US$500) and easy to build (<6 hours). Through extensive documentation (www.PiVR.org), this tool was designed to be accessible to a wide public, from high school students to professional researchers studying systems neuroscience in academia.

He will talk about how he came to be a neuroscientist researcher and ways into neuroscience. - Dr Anne Cooke, BNA Chief Executive – Anne studied physiology and neuroscience at university and carried out research into neuronal communication, before then following a career path with roles in academia and industry, and now as CE at the BNA. Anne will describe her own career in neuroscience, as well as some of the many other options open to you after a neuroscience degree.
Communicating (Neuro)Science
In recent years, communicating one’s research to audiences outside of academia has grown in importance and time commitment for many researchers. Science Slams or University Open Days reliably draw large crowds, and the potential of social media to amplify any message has made it possible to reach interested recipients without the traditional press as a middleman. In this presentation, I will provide insights into science communication from my perspective as a neuroscience researcher, who enjoys spreading the word about how amazing insect brains are. We will have a look at the What?, Why? and How? of science communication. What do we generally mean by the term, and what forms can it take? Why should – or must – we engage in it? And how can we best achieve our aims with it? I will provide an overview of the current communication landscape, some food for (critical) thought, and many practical tips that help me when preparing to share my science with a wider audience.

British Neuroscience Association (BNA) Festival - 2021
In April 2021, in partnership with the UK Dementia Research Institute, the British Neuroscience Association will host its fifth Festival of Neuroscience. Due to the ongoing uncertainty around COVID19, our 2021 event will be the first ever online Festival of Neuroscience. Although we are sorry to miss meeting in person, we're excited to create a whole new Festival experience! The ambition and scope of the BNA Festivals make them unparalleled across neuroscience. Being online will not change how the BNA2021 event will: - bring together multiple organisations with an interest in brain research at a single, shared event, creating a novel, multi-organisation forum featuring all areas of fundamental research in neuroscience and psychology, from both academia and the commercial sector, plus clinical expertise in neurology and psychiatry. - include a programme of public events as well. Past Festivals have seen a rap performance about consciousness, lunchtime talks, sessions in schools, and much more.
ALBA Session : Bias in Indian STEM
ALBA is organizing a special event on ‘Bias in Indian STEM’ at the online conference NeuroFemIndia 2021. Prof Shubha Tole (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research), ALBA Advisor, will be moderating and leading the discussion on biases in Indian STEM academia. The panel will discuss the main biases that women and minorities in India face as they navigate the academic system. This event is part of the NeuroFemIndia Online Conference 2021.
Data-driven Artificial Social Intelligence: From Social Appropriateness to Fairness
Designing artificially intelligent systems and interfaces with socio-emotional skills is a challenging task. Progress in industry and developments in academia provide us a positive outlook, however, the artificial social and emotional intelligence of the current technology is still limited. My lab’s research has been pushing the state of the art in a wide spectrum of research topics in this area, including the design and creation of new datasets; novel feature representations and learning algorithms for sensing and understanding human nonverbal behaviours in solo, dyadic and group settings; designing longitudinal human-robot interaction studies for wellbeing; and investigating how to mitigate the bias that creeps into these systems. In this talk, I will present some of my research team’s explorations in these areas including social appropriateness of robot actions, virtual reality based cognitive training with affective adaptation, and bias and fairness in data-driven emotionally intelligent systems.
Emergent scientists discuss Alzheimer's disease
This seminar is part of our “Emergent Scientists” series, an initiative that provides a platform for scientists at the critical PhD/postdoc transition period to share their work with a broad audience and network. Summary: These talks cover Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research in both mice and humans. Christiana will discuss in particular the translational aspects of applying mouse work to humans and the importance of timing in disease pathology and intervention (e.g. timing between AD biomarkers vs. symptom onset, timing of therapy, etc.). Siddharth will discuss a rare variant of Alzheimer’s disease called “Logopenic Progressive Aphasia”, which presents with temporo-parietal atrophy yet relative sparing of hippocampal circuitry. Siddharth will discuss how, despite the unusual anatomical basis underlying this AD variant, degeneration of the angular gyrus in the left inferior parietal lobule contributes to memory deficits similar to those of typical amnesic Alzheimer’s disease. Christiana’s abstract: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder that causes severe deterioration of memory, cognition, behavior, and the ability to perform daily activities. The disease is characterized by the accumulation of two proteins in fibrillar form; Amyloid-β forms fibrils that accumulate as extracellular plaques while tau fibrils form intracellular tangles. Here we aim to translate findings from a commonly used AD mouse model to AD patients. Here we initiate and chronically inhibit neuropathology in lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) layer two neurons in an AD mouse model. This is achieved by over-expressing P301L tau virally and chronically activating hM4Di DREADDs intracranially using the ligand dechloroclozapine. Biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is measured longitudinally in the model using microdialysis, and we use this same system to intracranially administer drugs aimed at halting AD-related neuropathology. The models are additionally tested in a novel contextual memory task. Preliminary findings indicate that viral injections of P301L tau into LEC layer two reveal direct projections between this region and the outer molecular layer of dentate gyrus and the rest of hippocampus. Additionally, phosphorylated tau co-localize with ‘starter cells’ and appear to spread from the injection site. Preliminary microdialysis results suggest that the concentrations of CSF amyloid-β and tau proteins mirror changes observed along the disease cascade in patients. The disease-modifying drugs appear to halt neuropathological development in this preclincial model. These findings will lead to a novel platform for translational AD research, linking the extensive research done in rodents to clinical applications. Siddharth’s abstract: A distributed brain network supports our ability to remember past events. The parietal cortex is a critical member of this network, yet, its exact contributions to episodic remembering remain unclear. Neurodegenerative syndromes affecting the posterior neocortex offer a unique opportunity to understand the importance and role of parietal regions to episodic memory. In this talk, I introduce and explore the rare neurodegenerative syndrome of Logopenic Progressive Aphasia (LPA), an aphasic variant of Alzheimer’s disease presenting with early, left-lateralized temporo-parietal atrophy, amidst relatively spared hippocampal integrity. I then discuss two key studies from my recent Ph.D. work showcasing pervasive episodic and autobiographical memory dysfunction in LPA, to a level comparable to typical, amnesic Alzheimer’s disease. Using multimodal neuroimaging, I demonstrate how degeneration of the angular gyrus in the left inferior parietal lobule, and its structural connections to the hippocampus, contribute to amnesic profiles in this syndrome. I finally evaluate these findings in the context of memory profiles in other posterior cortical neurodegenerative syndromes as well as recent theoretical models underscoring the importance of the parietal cortex in the integration and representation of episodic contextual information.
La investigación del cerebro: Esperanzas e incertidumbres
Esta conferencia pretende ofrecer una visión panorámica de los progresos en el conocimiento del cerebro, desde la fundación por Cajal de la moderna neurociencia hasta los muy recientes hallazgos aportados por la genética, la biología molecular, la microscopia y la electrofisiología al conocimiento de la estructura, conectividad y función de las células nerviosas, asi como sobre el funcionamiento integrado del cerebro humano aportado por las nuevas técnicas de imagen y el registro y estimulación selectivos de las distintas áreas cerebrales y su análisis con técnicas de computación. Finalmente se discutirán las repercusiones médicas y sociales que implica un mejor conocimiento del cerebro, sus limitaciones en el momento actual y los riesgo que conlleva el mal uso de los avances científicos de la neurociencia.
Panorama de tecnologías abiertas para ciencia y educación en América Latina
Open science hardware (OSH) as a concept usually refers to artifacts, but also to a practice, a discipline and a collective of people pushing for open access to the design of science tools. Since 2016, the Global Open Science Hardware (GOSH) movement gathers actors from academia, education, the private sector and civic organisations to advocate for OSH to be ubiquitous by 2025. In Latin America, GOSH advocates have fundraised and gathered around the development of annual "residencies" for building hardware for science and education. The community is currently defining its regional strategy and identifying other regional actors working on science and technology democratization. In this presentation I will give an overview of the open hardware movement for science, with a focus on the activities and strategy of the Latin American chapter and concrete ways to engage.

Have you ever wondered what your advisor struggled with as a graduate student? What they struggle with now? Growing up in science is a conversation series featuring personal narratives of becoming and being a scientist, with a focus on the unspoken challenges of a life in science. Growing up in Science was started in 2014 at New York University and is now worldwide. This article describes the origin and impact of the series. At a typical Growing up in Science event, one faculty member shares their life story, with a focus on struggles, failures, doubts, detours, and weaknesses. Common topics include dealing with expectations, impostor syndrome, procrastination, luck, rejection, conflicts with advisors, and work-life balance, life outside academia but these topics are always embedded in the speaker’s broader narrative. Cortex Club is hosting its first Growing up in science event!
