The Department of Psychology at the University of Miami invites applications for two full-time, tenure-eligible, or tenure-track faculty members to join our department in August 2024. One position is in the department’s Adult Division, and the other is the Cognitive & Behavioral Neuroscience division. The specific area for both positions is open. For the Adult Division, areas of focus could include basic research on affect, cognitive science, and/or mechanistic studies related to mental health or the impact of disparities. Scholars with expertise in lab-based experimental, neurophysiological, computational, and/or mobile health/digital phenotyping methods are welcome. Individuals with interests in data science, including advanced quantitative techniques, big data, and machine learning are also encouraged to apply. For the Cognitive & Behavioral Neuroscience Division, we are particularly interested in individuals who incorporate innovative and sophisticated cognitive, affective, or social neuroscience methods into their research program.

Prosocial Learning and Motivation across the Lifespan
2024 BACN Early-Career Prize Lecture Many of our decisions affect other people. Our choices can decelerate climate change, stop the spread of infectious diseases, and directly help or harm others. Prosocial behaviours – decisions that help others – could contribute to reducing the impact of these challenges, yet their computational and neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. I will present recent work that examines prosocial motivation, how willing we are to incur costs to help others, prosocial learning, how we learn from the outcomes of our choices when they affect other people, and prosocial preferences, our self-reports of helping others. Throughout the talk, I will outline the possible computational and neural bases of these behaviours, and how they may differ from young adulthood to old age.
A new science of emotion: How brain-mind-body processes form functional neurological disorder
One of the most common medical conditions you’ve (maybe) never heard of – functional neurological disorder – lays at the interface of neurology and psychiatry and offers a window into fundamental brain-mind-body processes. Across ancient and modern times, functional neurological disorder has had a long and tumultuous history, with an evolving debate and understanding of how biopsychosocial factors contribute to the manifestation of the disorder. A central issue in contemporary discussions has revolved around questioning the extent to which emotions play a mechanistic and aetiological role in functional neurological disorder. Critical in this context, however, is that this ongoing debate has largely omitted the question of what emotions are in the first place. This talk first brings together advances in the understanding of working principles of the brain fundamental to introducing a new understanding of what emotions are. Building on recent theoretical frameworks from affective neuroscience, the idea of how the predictive process of emotion construction can be an integral component of the pathophysiology of functional neurological disorder is discussed.
Multimodal framework and fusion of EEG, graph theory and sentiment analysis for the prediction and interpretation of consumer decision
The application of neuroimaging methods to marketing has recently gained lots of attention. In analyzing consumer behaviors, the inclusion of neuroimaging tools and methods is improving our understanding of consumer’s preferences. Human emotions play a significant role in decision making and critical thinking. Emotion classification using EEG data and machine learning techniques has been on the rise in the recent past. We evaluate different feature extraction techniques, feature selection techniques and propose the optimal set of features and electrodes for emotion recognition.Affective neuroscience research can help in detecting emotions when a consumer responds to an advertisement. Successful emotional elicitation is a verification of the effectiveness of an advertisement. EEG provides a cost effective alternative to measure advertisement effectiveness while eliminating several drawbacks of the existing market research tools which depend on self-reporting. We used Graph theoretical principles to differentiate brain connectivity graphs when a consumer likes a logo versus a consumer disliking a logo. The fusion of EEG and sentiment analysis can be a real game changer and this combination has the power and potential to provide innovative tools for market research.
How inclusive and diverse is non-invasive brain stimulation in the treatment of psychiatric disorders?
How inclusive and diverse is non-invasive brain stimulation in the treatment of psychiatric disorders?Indira Tendolkar, Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior, Department of Psychiatry. Mental illness is associated with a huge socioeconomic burden worldwide, with annual costs only in the Netherlands of €22 billion. Over two decades of cognitive and affective neuroscience research with modern tools of neuroimaging and neurophysiology in humans have given us a wealth of information about neural circuits underlying the main symptom domains of psychiatric disorders and their remediation. Neuromodulation entails the alteration of these neural circuits through invasive (e.g., DBS) or non-invasive (e.g., TMS) techniques with the aim of improving symptoms and/or functions and enhancing neuroplasticity. In my talk, I will focus on neuromodulation studies using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a relatively safe, noninvasive method, which can be performed simultaneously with neurocognitive interventions. Using the examples of two chronifying mental illnesses, namely obsessive compulsive disorders and major depressive disorder (MDD), I will review the concept of "state dependent" effects of rTMS and highlight how simultaneous or sequential cognitive interventions could help optimize rTMS therapy by providing further control of ongoing neural activity in targeted neural networks. Hardly any attention has been paid to diversity aspects in the studies. By including studies from low- and middle income countries, I will discuss the potential of non-invasive brain stimulation from a transcultural perspective.
