Making use of visual display technology and human-robotic interfaces, many researchers have illustrated various opportunities to distort visual and physical realities. We have had success with interventions such as error augmentation, sensory crossover, and negative viscosity. Judicial application of these techniques leads to training situations that enhance the learning process and can restore movement ability after neural injury. I will trace out clinical studies that have employed such technologies to improve the health and function, as well as share some leading-edge insights that include deceiving the patient, moving the "smarts" of software into the hardware, and examining clinical effectiveness

Sperm have got the bends
The journey of development begins with sperm swimming through the female reproductive tract en-route to the egg. In order to successfully complete this journey sperm must beat a single flagellum, propelling themselves through a wide range of fluids, from liquified semen to viscous cervical mucus. It is well-known that the beating tail is driven by an array of 9 microtubule doublets surrounding a central pair, with interconnecting dynein motors generating shear forces and driving elastic wave propagation. Despite this knowledge, the exact mechanism by which coordination of these motors drives oscillating waves along the flagellum remains unknown; hypothesised mechanisms include curvature control, sliding control, and geometric clutch. In this talk we will discuss the mechanisms of flagellar bending, and present a simple model of active curvature that is able to produce many of the various sperm waveforms that are seen experimentally, including those in low and high viscosity fluids and after a cell has ‘hyperactivated’ (a chemical process thought to be key for fertilization). We will show comparisons between these simulated waveforms and sperm that have been experimentally tracked, and discuss methods for fitting simulated mechanistic parameters to these real cells.
Acoustically Levitated Granular Matter
Granular matter can serve as a prototype for exploring the rich physics of many-body systems driven far from equilibrium. This talk will outline a new direction for granular physics with macroscopic particles, where acoustic levitation compensates the forces due to gravity and eliminates frictional interactions with supporting surfaces in order to focus on particle interactions. Levitating small particles by intense ultrasound fields in air makes it possible to manipulate and control their positions and assemble them into larger aggregates. The small air viscosity implies that the regime of underdamped dynamics can be explored, where inertial effects are important, in contrast to typical colloids in a liquid, where inertia can be neglected. Sound scattered off individual, levitated solid particles gives rise to controllable attractive forces with neighboring particles. I will discuss some of the key concepts underlying acoustic levitation, describe how detuning an acoustic cavity can introduce active fluctuations that control the assembly statistics of small levitated particles clusters, and give examples of how interactions between neighboring levitated objects can be controlled by their shape.
Slowing down the body slows down time (perception)
Interval timing is a fundamental component action, and is susceptible to motor-related temporal distortions. Previous studies have shown that movement biases temporal estimates, but have primarily considered self-modulated movement only. However, real-world encounters often include situations in which movement is restricted or perturbed by environmental factors. In the following experiments, we introduced viscous movement environments to externally modulate movement and investigated the resulting effects on temporal perception. In two separate tasks, participants timed auditory intervals while moving a robotic arm that randomly applied four levels of viscosity. Results demonstrated that higher viscosity led to shorter perceived durations. Using a drift-diffusion model and a Bayesian observer model, we confirmed these biasing effects arose from perceptual mechanisms, instead of biases in decision making. These findings suggest that environmental perturbations are an important factor in movement-related temporal distortions, and enhance the current understanding of the interactions of motor activity and cognitive processes. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.10.26.355396v1
Synthetic swimmers: microorganism swimming without microorganisms
The effect of non Newtonian liquid rheology on the swimming performance of microorganisms is still poorly understood, despite numerous recent studies. In our effort to clarify some aspects of this problem, we have developed a series of magnetic synthetic swimmers that self-propel immersed in a fluid by emulating the swimming strategy of flagellated microorganisms. With these devices, it is possible to control some aspects of the motion with the objective to isolate specific effects. In this talk, recent results on the effects of shear-thinning viscosity and viscoelasticity on the motion of helical swimmers will presented and discussed. Also, a number of other new uses of the synthetic swimmers will be presented including swimming across gradients, swimming in sand, interactions and rheometry.
