Age-related hearing loss in older adults and cognition in older adults: Preliminary findings

Yi Ran Wang, Elodie Berthelier, Simon Cormier, Daniel Paromov, Karina Annita, Sven Joubert, François Champoux, Hugo Théoret · FENS Forum 2024

Presbycusis, also known as age-related hearing loss (ARHL), affects up to two-thirds of older adults. It is an important public health issue, as recent studies have shown that ARHL is associated with a wide range of cognitive functions including inhibition and cognitive flexibility. Moreover, the Lancet Commission (2020) identified hearing impairment as the highest of 12 modifiable individual risk factors for dementia. Here, preliminary results of a comprehensive study aimed at better understanding the neural underpinnings of AHRL-related cognitive decline are presented better understand how A

Multisession electric stimulation of the auditory cortex prevents cortical aging in an age-related hearing loss Wistar rat model

Inés S. Fernández del Campo, Antonio Fuente Juan, Iván Díaz, Ignacio Plaza, Miguel A. Merchán · FENS Forum 2024

We have previously communicated that multisession epidural direct current anodic stimulation (ES) of the auditory cortex (AC) preserves hearing thresholds (Fernández del Campo, 2024) and the loss of neurons in the olivary brainstem efferent system (Alvarado, 2024) after aging. Although it is known that the descending pathway is the main effector for hearing preservation in our age-related hearing loss (ARHL) model, intrinsic mechanisms through which ES preserves cortical regulation must be analyzed. Our hypothesis is that our ES protocol regulates AC activity and prevents alterations in inhibi
