Applications are invited for our fifth edition of Systems Vision Science (SVS) summer school since 2023, designed for everyone interested in gaining a systems level understanding of biological vision. We plan a coherent, graduate-level, syllabus on the integration of experimental data with theory and models, featuring lectures, guided exercises and discussion sessions. The summer school will end with a Systems Vision Science symposium on frontier topics on August 25-27, with additional invited and contributed presentations and posters. Aran Nayebi traces connections between neural-network architectures, biological vision and the design of autonomous cognitive agents. He proposes supplementing behavioural AI benchmarks with comparisons of internal population representations, discussing what a NeuroAI version of the Turing test could reveal about whether artificial and biological systems solve tasks in similar ways.

Cortically motivated recurrence enables visual task extrapolation

Vijay Veerabadran, Yuan Tang, Ritik Raina, Virginia de Sa · COSYNE 2023

Biological neural networks use an abundance of “recurrent” connections, yet state-of-the-art deep neural network based computer vision models are predominantly feedforward. Why does biological vision evolve to employ recurrence pervasively? In this paper, we aim to address this question from a machine learning and modeling framework highlighting a critical functional advantage of employing recurrent computations: we show that a recurrent network is naturally able to adapt its computational budget flexibly during inference and generalizes in a zero-shot manner within-task across difficulties. W

Convolutional neural networks currently provide the best models of biological vision. However, their decision behavior, including the facts that they are deterministic and use equal number of computations for easy and difficult stimuli, differs markedly from human decision-making, thus limiting their applicability as models of human perceptual behavior. Here we develop a new neural network, RTNet, that generates stochastic decisions and human-like response time (RT) distributions, and also reproduces all foundational features of human accuracy, RT, and confidence. To test RTNet9s ability to pr
