Steward Observatory, University of Arizona convenes this meeting on infrared astronomy and the evolution of active galaxies in recognition of George and Marcia Rieke. The opening sessions examine detector development, major facilities and future missions, connecting instrumentation with Solar System, stellar, galactic and cosmological research. Later sessions address black-hole growth, obscured activity, star formation, galaxy co-evolution and early galaxies, including findings enabled by Spitzer and JWST. A reception is scheduled for March 15 at 18:00 and the banquet for March 16 at 18:00, lo

Early active black holes seen by JWST, pulsar-timing evidence for a gravitational-wave background and stellar tidal disruptions probe different parts of black-hole growth. This talk presents L-GalaxiesBH, which follows black holes and their host galaxies from early formation to the present. Combining these observations constrains growth models, including the abundance of rapidly growing early objects, massive binaries nearby and elusive intermediate-mass systems.

A star passing close to a supermassive black hole can be torn apart, supplying gas to an accretion disk that brightens dramatically. This seminar explains how observations of these tidal-disruption events reveal otherwise difficult-to-observe aspects of black-hole growth.
