BRAIN Building Webinar: Brain Metabolism

Sakthivel Ravi · University of Florida

Brain metabolism supplies the energy underlying brain injury, recovery and aging. This webinar brings together three complementary approaches to understanding how repetitive mild traumatic brain injury affects these processes. Sakthivel Ravi examines repetitive mild TBI and aging through multimodal imaging and molecular profiling. Adam Khalifa presents wireless brain glucose sensing for TBI research, and Joe Abisambra discusses disruption of bioenergetic pathways following repetitive mild TBI. The talks are followed by a moderated question-and-answer discussion.

Identification of metabolic pathways activated by different learning strategies in mice

Alexandre Carrea, Filippo La Greca, Gabriele Imperato et al. · FENS Forum 2024

…complex behaviors further increase brain energy demands. Despite the interest given to brain metabolism during the last years, how modification of metabolism might contribute to cognitive dysfunctions in brain disorders is not clear. Thus, we aim to identify the key metabolic pathways activated during complex cognitive functions. In this study, we will focus on metabolic pathways activated by d

The proportion of aged individuals in the general population is increasing, and non-communicable diseases like obesity are major contributors to mortality in older individuals. The WNIN/Ob obese rat exhibits a significantly reduced average lifespan of 15 months. Exploring molecular and biochemical characteristics of these rats can establish them as appropriate model for studying the neurobiology of aging and obesity. We investigated the growth characteristics and lifespan of WNIN/Obobese rats, examined neuronal-glial changes, levels of oxidative stress, antioxidant enzyme activity, and DNA dama
